Sober Living for Men of All Ages.
A great place to start your recovery!
The History…
In 2011 Gary and Charlie were approached by members of A.A. and local professionals with the need for a 12 step based sober home in Portland, ME. They were aware that the transition from intensive rehab back into society can be one of the most difficult and critical steps in one’s sobriety. Understanding that location, cost, and program are the key factors by which an appropriate house is decided upon, they tailored Providence Place to attain these three elements without compromising any one of them.
The City…
Along with offering beauty, friendly people and a strong economy, Portland, ME is one of the largest growing recovery communities in the country. With a multitude of sober and oxford houses, Portland is experiencing a phenomenon of recovery. Resources abound with recovery centers, AA clubs, IOP’s, and hundreds of local AA/CA/NA meetings every week. This unassuming city is the preferred destination for individuals coming out of rehabs all over the East Coast and country combined.
The Cost…
With a cost of around $850, Providence Place allows residents to work local jobs while enjoying the accomplishment and responsibility of paying their own rent. With other sober house costs leveling at $1000 or more a month, many newly sober men cannot afford the cost without the assistance of a third party – often their families. Taking financial ownership of one’s life is one of the gifts of sobriety. We strive to keep the rent to a reasonable level by accepting donations from other local Nonprofits in the area who appreciate and respect what Providence Place is doing.
The Structure…
Regular meeting attendance, home group involvement, sustainable employment, random drug testing and Big Book work with a sponsor are all basic requirements to live at the house. We strongly believe that working the steps of Alcoholics Anonymous as the way out of addiction. Three live-in Peer-Leaders maintain a supportive presence in the house both day and night. Our main goal is to ensure that the houses run smoothly and that all residents are moving through the steps in a timely and meaningful manner.
The Houses…<
Providence Place is growing! Charlie and Gary opened another house two doors down in the fall of 2013. Five more rooms put the total number of available beds at 24. We are located in the historic district of Portland, directly across from Maine Medical Center. The two newly remodeled, single family Victorian houses are beautiful inside and out. Safety and comfort are a priority of the owners, and they don’t cut any corners to make sure each house is nicely furnished, coded, and sprinkled. We welcome a visit from rehabs and potential residents, and would love to show you around our sober houses. Please email us if you have any questions or would like further information on Providence Place.
